Hunter S Thompson is finally the subject of a major release documentary called Gonzo: The Life And Work Of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson.
I’ve been a fan of his since about 1992 when our 3rd year Political Science lecturer and Umkhonto we Sizwe member suggested we read him for an essay on US policy decision-making. And if I remember correctly, the essay’s title was from that other political satirist PJ Rourke – and went something like:
The three estates of US government: Money, Television and Bullshit.
My dog-eared copy of Fear and Loathing is selotaped and yellowed after it’s been passed between so many mates like grainy vhs porn – the righteous scriptures.
There have been other films released but none with any major release schedule. This one is directed and scripted by Alex Gibney of Enron, the Smartest guys in the room, fame.
It has already been released in the US. For UK releases, I could only find a mention on LaunchingFilms.com, which gives a general release date of the 19th of December this year by Optimum Releasing.
But no actual circuit release dates. I’ll keep and eye out and let you know if I know, you know?
To kick up some interest they have released the trailer, which I have here:
And just so he can have the last word – from the scriptures:
“We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark – the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.”
